How teens deal with… Adoption: Domestic vs. International
By Meagan Richardson

According to Mental Health Net, adoptions can be either domestic or international; the difference depends on the place of adoption. If both the birth parents and adoptive parents are from this country then the adoption is considered domestic. If the birth parents and adoptive parents are from another country then the adoption is considered international. Both have certain advantages and disadvantages.

Domestic adoption agencies usually give a more accurate and detailed background information of the child. Also possible in domestic adoptions is the possibility of obtaining a newborn. In this type of adoption the adoptive couple can be matched with a pregnant mother. Yet, the parents of the child can choose to change their mind before the final process or want their child later on in life.

International adoption agencies differ in the fact they do not always give accurately detailed information about the child. And in the case of many babies, it is possible to not obtain the child till after a few months or close to a year. An advantage to international adoption is the fact that the adoption is closed in nature. This meaning it is less likely for the parent to come looking for the child later. A disadvantage of international adoption is the costliness of going out of the country to adopt.

Either domestic or international adoptions can be beneficial and depending on the person either is acceptable.
